Scissor lifts are very powerful pieces of machinery that allow you to reach high places and to transport yourself and items to various areas. As useful as they are they can be dangerous in the hands of the inexperienced. It is vital for people to know what they are doing and how to be safe when operating any type of scissor lift.
Scissor Lift Training
Before you operate these machines it is essential that you go through training lessons that will teach you everything you need to know. During these lessons you will be instructed on how to move around safely and how to avoid accidents and mechanical problems. This training is required by OSHA to prevent accidents and deaths when operating them.
Inspect The Lift
The first thing you need to do before getting on and using the scissor lift is to inspect every inch of it. Employees should not and must never be allowed to use any equipment that is not safe to use according to OSHA regulations. Inspect the safety devices, emergency controls, fall protection gear, tires, and other components to make sure that they are working properly. If you notice any leaks or missing parts you need to report it immediately to your employer to ensure that no one else uses the lift till it is repaired.
Along with checking the lift you should also check the area that you will be using it in. any bumps, holes, drop offs, debris, and obstructions will make the area unsafe for you to maneuver and drive the scissor lift.
Operating Tips
- Make sure that the chains or doors on the platform are closed at all times when you are inside and moving the lift.
- You must be standing on the floor of the platform or bucket. There is to be no climbing, riding on the bumpers, or leaning over the guardrails.
- You must never place more then the load capacity set by the manufacturer. This could cause it the platform to shift and tip when lifted into the air.
- When you are working in high traffic areas make sure to put up cones and signs to warn them you are there. Always look where you are going for people who are not paying attention.
- You must always wear the necessary fall protection gear that is given to you. If none is available then wait to use the lift till your employer provides it.
- When operating a bucket truck you must be wearing a full body harness and lanyard or other types of restraining devices that will prevent you from falling. This is a requirement created by OSHA.
- Never drive the machine when it is lifted into the air as this might cause the platform and machine to tip over.
- Do not go raise the lift into the air when you have exceeded the maximum load capacity.
